In Midget quarterfinal action at Lampeter-Strasburg Saturday, Ephrata
and Hempfield both overcame early deficits to get the victory. Ephrata
defeated East Petersburg 7-2 in the opener, while Hempfield knocked off
Elizabethtown in the second game 10-7.
Ephrata 7, East Pete 2 East Petersburg took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with two
unearned runs, but Ephrata later rallied for the win.
Aaron Fries tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-run single
that scored Brandon Mentzer and Pat Conlin, and the Marlins took a 5-2
lead in the fifth when Mike Watterson scored on Brad Wolfe's throwing
error, Ben Good scored on Conlin's RBI groundout and Mentzer scored on a
balk.
Ephrata scored two more insurance runs in the sixth, which was more
than enough for Fries, who limited East Petersburg to two hits and no
earned runs in seven innings. Fries fanned 14 and walked one.

Hempfield 10, E-town 7
Down 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Hempfield put together an 8-run
rally to take the lead for good in the second game of the doubleheader.
Hempfield took a 2-0 lead in the first on Ryan Miller's two-run
single, but E-town rallied for four runs in the fourth on RBI singles by
Dave Willenbecker and Jack Kern. Drew Hughes also drove in a run when he
drew a walk with the bases loaded, and another run came in on Jeff Moore's
fielder's choice.
E-town got three more in the fifth off reliever Matt Roberts. Zach
Polito led off with a single and scored on Willenbecker's double. Eric
Stone then scored on a throwing error, and Adam Bartles drove in the last
run with an RBI groundout.
In the bottom of the inning, Miller picked up his fourth RBI of the
game with a two-run single and later scored on Justin Unton's two-run
double. After Aaron Herr plated another run with a sacrifice bunt, Roberts
drove in two more with a single and Miller got his second hit of the
inning to plate Mark Braun.
Roberts got the win in relief for Hempfield with four innings of work.
He gave up four runs on six hits, walked four and struck out four.
